How to work pragmatically with children

Welcome to this program with Pragmatic Psychology!

This is an invitation to everyone who works with children: parents, grandparents, teachers, coaches, therapists, doctors.

Pragmatic means doing what works. In this reality, the focus is mainly on problems. Children who are different are assessed, made wrong, and even sometimes diagnosed as suffering from some kind of disease.

What is possible that goes beyond this paradigm?

What if there were capacities beneath all these problems just waiting to be discovered?

Parents and teachers often torment themselves, judging themselves for being wrong, not doing enough, or not doing it right. I invite you to discover the strongness beneath all of this, to find out what you are capable of and what you know about children and working with families.

In the following modules, I will show you a completely new approach to working with children. How many capacities, and how much knowledge do the kids have, that they have never been acknowledged for?

Module 1

Your Difference is a Gift

What contribution can you be for the kids you are working with, just because you are different? In this module I would like to invite you to discover your difference and to see it and acknowledge it for the gift that it is.

  • Your Starting Point

What do you know about working with kids? What is your starting point, your intention? Why did you take this job? In this module, we explore all of this.

  • Contribution

What contribution are you to the children? And how much can the children contribute to you? We look at how you can engage with the children’s playful perspective and how much there is to discover with this.

  • Seeing judgments as positive

Your difference is your greatest strength. In this module, I will show you how you can stop making judgment significant, and just see it for what it is.

Module 2

From Education to Empowerment

In this module, we put the emphasis on empowerment, not on education. Empowerment means showing the kids the things, the knowledge that’s hidden away in them, and giving them some tools so that they can access this wisdom way more easily.

  • Questions as seeds of possibilities

Children are used to being given answers, judgments and orders. When they are asked questions, kids become empowered to discover what they know, and what’s actually true for them. Learn how to ask real questions that will help the kids find out what’s true for them.

  • Fake questions vs real questions

Get ready to ask lots of questions, and then leave some time for the questions to have their effect on the schoolchildren. True questions will open doors. Fake questions are looking for an answer, or for a reason that something is occurring.

  • Get More clarity with the tool light and heavy

This tool shows the kids what is true for them. It’s like a compass through the jungle of judgments and points of view.

  • Follow the lightness

In our world heaviness is given a lot of importance. And it’s actually lightness that is true for us. Following lightness is what creates more for us in our lives. Show the children a navigation system for their lives: lightness.

Module 3

What’s possible with knowing and awareness

In this module we learn to trust what we know. If judgments and points of view are not even real, what is actually possible?

It’s a massive contribution to these kids if you can acknowledge them for their innate knowing, and if you can show them that not everything that goes on in their worlds has necessarily anything to do with them.

  • A new way of seeing things: Interesting point of view

Instead of going into judgment and wrongness, this tool is an invitation to see things from a different perspective. This tool is so powerful. It can show the kids that their points of view are not as real as they thought and that they are changeable at any time.

  • Find Freedom with the tool “Who does this belong to?”

How much are the kids aware of everything that’s going on around them? With this tool you can show them how they can immediately see what’s really going on by asking a question, and quickly see how little all of that stuff has to do with them.

  • Awareness as a Treasure Trove

Show the children how their awareness, their perception can be a treasure trove for them. How much knowledge are they carrying around with them, that you can help them to access? And how can they use all this information to their advantage?

  • Space for Relaxation

A lot of children have no idea how to handle all the stuff they are aware of. Acknowledge them for their amazing sensitivity. Practice the exercise of lowering your barriers with them, so that they start to have more ease with their awareness.

Module 4

The Capacities behind the diagnosis

In this model, we shed light on the capacities hiding behind diagnoses like ADHD and autism. There are also new tools to help children learn, and to show them how their awareness can be a capacity.

  • Feelings:

Ask the kids what they are aware of, and help them to find out more of what they are aware of through play. Feelings are deceptive. It’s easy to get lost in interpretations and constructs. It’s easy to project everything onto your current situation. Show them what’s possible beyond their feelings, and how much potency there is in their awareness.

  • Energetic communication

Nonverbal communication is often much more natural for children. In this module we will look at what’s possible when you communicate with the kids non-verbally, and what a gift that is for them.

  • Seeing diagnoses as a reward for being different

Pragmatic Psychology has a very different approach when it comes to diagnoses. ADHD and autism are ways of functioning in the world that are just different. And so we see diagnoses as a reward for being different. This is my invitation to you: to discover the capacities behind these diagnoses.

  • ADHD

Kids with ADHD have a massive capacity to multitask. In this module we look at how you can contribute to them having more ease with their school day, and with homework. We also look more closely at these multitasking capacities and see what’s really possible for the kids with this.

Module 5

Pragmatic not dramatic

In this module we give particular attention to working with young people. Here too, the approach with Pragmatic Psychology is to look at what works, and how you can empower young people to discover their talents and abilities.

The world loves diversity. Being different is a gift, and can work really well in the world when it’s not judged, and when you are willing to see the possibilities beyond it. What change can you create in the kids by being different?

  • Empowerment

In this module my invitation is to allow the young people to make their own choices. We practice being the space that invites them to make their own choices and look at how you can support them with the tools.

  • Support for parents

It's important to not always jump into the drama. Lots of parents believe they have failed. Be the invitation to not take everything so personally, and to not go to wrongness or judgment.

  • Choice creates

Every choice creates awareness and gives us information. You can support young people to make their own choices and at the same time show them what their choices are creating.

  • Truancy

I will give you some tools to show you how to handle truancy, and how to quickly create change for the youngsters with some targeted questions. Here too I will show you how you can find a pragmatic solution rather than stepping into the drama.

  • Invitation to more

The tools can really change a lot when you are willing to be open and curious, rather than looking for answers. We discover how you can invite the kids to something new every day, and how you can support them to grow into their amazingness without going into judgments and projections.
